Maternity Africa is currently working with its clinical staff to update their practical skills. We recently hired two midwife-mentors, and Sister Marianne from the Netherlands joined us earlier this month. She is training our own people and will develop a training curriculum for external midwives for when they join us for training soon too.

This morning, Sister Marianne staged a surprise, mock bleeding incident whilst the staff were engaged in something else, to see how they would deal with an emergency. The picture shows her in action, being ‘cared for’ by our teams.

Practical skills training like this is tremendous and supplements theoretical knowledge and understanding. We also recognise that individuals have different learning styles – some like group work, and others prefer a one-to-one approach.
