Maternity Africa’s 2021 season of outreach trips and training programme for fistula patient ambassadors is underway in Dodoma Region in the heart of Tanzania. Social Worker Grace and Fistula Nurse Etropia have spent the past couple of days educating the next group of patient ambassadors on how to screen and refer ladies from their communities so that they can receive life-changing surgery at Kivulini Maternity Centre.

Tomorrow, Grace and Etropia plan to travel to villages in rural, outlying areas where they can screen more ladies for surgery, and educate people on how best to prevent obstetric fistula from occurring by adopting safe childbirth techniques. Maternity Africa provides fistula treatment all year round for straightforward cases, and at specialist ‘camps’ several times a year, when Dr Andrew Browning travels to Tanzania to operate, and to train further our in-house doctors.
