Maryciana, a 45-year-old mother of five from eastern Tanzania, lived with obstetric fistula for more than two decades.

Her condition began in 1999, during her first pregnancy. After two days of prolonged labour, she was taken to the district hospital. Unable to deliver normally because the baby was stuck, she underwent a Caesarean Section. Sadly, her baby did not survive. Just two days later, Maryciana noticed she was leaking urine. She was reassured that it would heal, but the leakage continued and for years she did not know where to seek help.

Despite her condition, Maryciana went on to have five children while living with fistula. Throughout this long journey, her husband remained a pillar of support, encouraging her and standing by her side.

In 2025, Maternity Africa met Maryciana through one of our fistula ambassadors. After being screened by our outreach team, she was brought in and admitted for surgery.

In July 2025, after 26 years of living with fistula, Maryciana finally received treatment. Her surgery was successful, and she was completely cured. On 6th August 2025, she was discharged home with a new beginning, free from fistula.

Thanks to your support, women like Maryciana can find hope and healing after years of suffering.
