Such a privilege Maternity Africa enjoyed, welcoming five aspiring teenagers from Girls Foundation of Tanzania (www.girlsfoundationoftanzania.org). The girls joined our team at Kivulini Maternity Centre for a six week work placement. We introduced them to working in a hospital setting, and the roles that provide high quality maternal healthcare, free of charge to vulnerable women. Every girl benefited from several days in each of our maternity unit, antenatal clinic, operating theatre, medical laboratory, pharmacy, maintenance, finance and human resources departments. It was wonderful for the girls to understand the inter-dependencies across and within these functional areas. At the start of their placement, most of the girls desired to become doctors. However, at the end, we had one budding doctor, a surgeon, a midwife, a laboratory technician and an accountant.
Thank you to our incredible Kivulini Maternity Centre staff. You ensured the richness of the girls’ experience at Maternity Africa. We look forward to them returning in the future to join us.
